The Art of Being Present

Being present-2

We are all living in a stressful fast paced world. Thanks to computers and smart phones the days of relaxing once you are home from work are well gone. The emails, texts and Facebook messages never stop. It is easy to continuously keep adding things to your to do list faster than you can cross them off.

When was the last time you truly appreciated a moment with all of your senses?

By all of your senses I mean when did you last stop and look at the beauty of something for more than a fleeting second? When did you listen to the wind blowing or stop to smell the roses? When was the last time you slowed down enough to taste every bite of a meal? If you are anything like the rest of us the answer might be ‘some time’.

With the constant pressure to always be doing some thing we have become a generation that has trouble unwinding and appreciating the now.

Stopping to appreciate a moment in your life gives you the ability to feel free, even if it is only for a short period of time. Being ‘free’ for just a short period can allow you to clarify your thoughts and recharge your mind. Being present in the moment can be challenging if you haven’t tried to do it for sometime.

I personally had to teach myself to be present in the moment again. I started by going to the beach, which is a place where I feel at ease. I then took time to ‘feel’ the sand between my toes, ‘watching’ the beauty of the ocean, whilst ‘listening’ to the sound of the waves crashing. At first I really had to concentrate on my senses but with practice being present in the moment became easier and I can now be present in the moment whenever I need to refresh and recharge.

I urge you to give it a go, It may take some practice but trust me it will be well worthwhile for your overall well-being.
